New Public Space and Mural: Fore Bondgate & North Bondgate

The new public space connecting Fore Bondgate and North Bondgate opened in April 2024. A wall mural is currently being painted by Jackie Stonehouse, a local independent Bishop Auckland artist, and Durham Spray Paints. The mural should hopefully be finished by the end of May (depending on the weather!), with planting to be done after it’s been completed.

New Bistro and Wine Bar on Fore Bondgate

A new bistro and wine bar, The Foodie’s Bistro and Winebar, will be opening soon on Fore Bondgate in Bishop Auckland, offering the best in food and wine from around the world.

The opening date, opening times and menu will be announced soon.

Award for Pinepple Art Gallery

The Pineapple Gallery on North Bondgate, Bishop Auckland, already an award-winning art gallery, has received another prize. It has been awarded the Best Local Contemporary Art Gallery in County Durham for 2023 under the Northern Enterprise Awards.

The Northern Enterprise Awards celebrate the industriousness and dedication of businesses and enterprises hailing from the north of England.

New Gift Shop on Fore Bondgate

DC Gifts, a gift shop specialising in spiritual and scented products, has been open and trading at 57 Fore Bondgate since 25th August. DC Gifts is operated by Mark Murray, who has been in retail since 2010.

The shop offers a great value range of spiritual and scented product and is the only shop of its kind in Bishop Auckland.

New Public Space between Fore Bondgate and North Bondgate

The demolition of the former bingo hall/amusement arcade at 58-59 Fore Bondgate is now almost complete, having begun in late July.

It is hoped the remaining works will be fully completed by early 2024.

The area will become a new public space, with paving, benches, trees and flower planters, and kiosk space for street food sellers. It will also provide a link between Fore Bondgate and North Bondgate, so visitors will be more easily able to access the variety of independent shops and services on Fore Bondgate and North Bondgate.

Bay Horse Pub in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2024

Fore Bondgate’s oldest pub, The Bay Horse, is one of sixteen pubs in County Durham that have been listed in the 2024 edition of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide.

According to CAMRA’s website, the Good Beer Guide ‘is the UK’s best-selling beer and pub guide and it continues to represent the best of the best in the brewing and hospitality industry’.

The 2024 Guide lists 4,500 pubs, bars and clubs, and lists 16 County Durham establishments, including Fore Bondgate’s The Bay Horse, one of the variety of businesses in the Fore Bondgate Street Directory.
